TEXT: JOHN 21:1-17
This is another appearance of the risen Lord to the disciples, this time only seven of them viz – Simon Peter, Thomas who was absent in the last group when Jesus appeared, Nathaniel, the two sons of Zebedee-James and John his brother, and two other not named disciples which might or might not be the twelve closest disciples; after all those he appeared to on the way to Emmaus were not among the twelve.
These disciples resumed fishing; their former means of livelihood. However, there is record of miracles of Jesus among these seven which certainly occurred in other appearances. In v. 10, he provided fire and fish already being prepared before disciples’ own; verse 6, he provided fish for the disciples to catch where they had laboured in vain all the right. No one knows how many would have wandered away from the work of fishing for souls if he had not appeared to them there. The fishes were numbered showing that every soul won is counted in heaven and precious in God’s sight.
PRAYER: Lord God, help me not to relapse in my service to you.
