TEXT: LUKE 15:11-24
Today’s story portrays a young man who makes rather an unusual demand. Ideally the young man’s request is only carried out when the father who is the head of the family is dead. This fellow went to request his share, bypassing his older brother. “Beware of covetousness, for a man’s life is not dependent on the amount of wealth he has”. This fellow went to a far country, wasted his wealth in a riotous living, squandered his inheritance on women and alcohol etc. How often some of us today waste the grace that has been giving to us in our waywardness? God’s gifts are meant to be put to good use. What gifts has God deposited in you? You can put them to use and advance the kingdom’s business. As you go out today, unlike the prodigal son, make deliberate effort to put to use the gifts your heavenly father has given you.
Few things we must understand from this parable: (1) be respectful towards your elders, by this young man’s request it shows he has no respect for his older brother; he also didn’t respect his father enough. (2) Desire your father’s will rather than your own: Jesus prayed when he was about to enter into suffering, ‘Father let your will be done’ it very important for us today to submit to the will of our father in heaven in order to please him. (3) Do not squander your resources, believers are expected to show wisdom in every of their dealings, when you squander your resources, either of them, you run into trouble. (4) Wealth not managed well will end in poverty.
PRAYER: Lord help me to be prudent in all my dealings, and give the grace to make the best of your gifts to me.
