TEXT: MATTHEW 4:18-25
When Jesus began to preach, he began to gather disciples who should be hearers and later preachers of his doctrine. The disciples were expected also to witness his miracles and testify concerning them. He could have gone to the chief priests and the elders to choose his disciples but went to the Sea of Galilee to choose among the fishermen. This indicates that Jesus chooses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. Diligence in an honest calling is pleasing to
God and it is not a hindrance to a holy life. It has been observed that idle people are more open to the temptations of the devil than to the calls of God.
However, those who would follow Christ right must at his command leave all things to follow him. This serves as encouragement to depend upon him for his grace. Just as Christ performed his miracle by curing many bodily diseases showed his power to cure diseases and was able to cure spiritual maladies. Sin is the sickness, disease, and torment of the soul. Jesus came to take away sin and also to heal the soul. The diseases mentioned in the passage are palsy, lunacy and possession of the evil spirit.
Palsy which is the greatest weakness of the body; lunacy which is the greatest malady of the mind and possession of the devil which is the greatest misery and calamity of both were all healed by Christ Jesus. It is important to ask oneself “Am I in my calling”. Ask the Lord to call you into the right calling and be diligent in his call upon your life.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to know my calling for the kingdom call that my Labour in your service shall not be in vain. Amen.
