REFUSING TO FOLLOW

TEXT:   LUKE 18:18-26

The rich man here thought that earning righteousness would allow him to merit eternal life but Jesus taught that it was a gift to be received. Anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it. To be a true follower of Jesus and receive eternal life, we must give our whole hearts to him. The rich man would have followed Jesus but for his wealth. His wealth kept him away from following Jesus with his whole heart.

Jesus told him the truth about going into the kingdom of God despite his riches. The evangelists of nowadays would have been happy to receive the rich man at least for the money he would pump into their ministries.

This is enjoining us to always speak the truth. God has ways of doing His things. We should be truthful at all times.

Jesus looked at the rich man in verse 24 and said how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. He now stated how difficult it would be by the illustration of a Carmel passing through the eye of a needle. This does not mean that the rich cannot enter God’s kingdom, but the rich should surrender their lives and all they have to the Lord Jesus Christ. Our love should be for Jesus Christ before any other thing. What is impossible to man is possible with God. It is not because of our righteousness that we can enter the kingdom but by God’s grace.

PRAYER: Grant me grace in my followership so that I will not miss heaven, Oh Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
